10 til 2

Punch The Clock, Mommy Style - The corporate world is looking for a few good moms

Getting back into the working world can be intimidating for the Teddy Grahams crowd. But if you're ready to ease on in, business partners and fellow moms Jill Ater, Liz Norwood, Jodi Olin and Heidi Crum want you. Their company, 10 til 2, puts moms back into the workforce in part-time positions with flexible companies. "We are not a temp agency," says Ater. "These are permanent jobs where people work anywhere from four to 30 hours a week."

Since its 2003 inception, 10 til 2 has placed more than 100 people in such positions as bookkeeping, office management, graphic design, sales, engineering, information technology, legal assistance, and consulting. The employees they place are generally moms, but the company also works with seniors, grad students, and stay-at-home dads. Candidates who have college educations are often overqualified for the jobs being offered, but for most the trade-off is well worth the comfort of knowing they can be home for their kids before and after school (or if a child is sick) and never miss a school play or baseball game because of work.

Companies like software developer Advantage Management Intelligence have found that 10 til 2 fills a unique niche. "On our side, we've found positions within the company that, with an experienced professional, we can get more done on a flexible schedule," explains CEO Scott Wyatt. "If you take a big section of the workforce off the table, that's a loss to society, to the economy, and the business world. I see the value in having flexibility with kids and family-it's a lifestyle choice."
